Aledo's Historic Water Tower

With the construction of the new water tower in Aledo’s Industrial Park, the historic “tin man” tower in downtown is slated for demolition.  These early 1900s tower are becoming rare as communities elect to tear them down, often to the remorse of the community.  Hopefully, Aledo will not be joining this group soon.

Aledo Main Street is working with the City of Aledo, Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (IHPA), National Trust for Historic Preservation, and local citizens to determine the feasibility of saving the tower given the existing financial and safety constraints.  The IHPA has suggested an architectural study of the tower be completed to determine the cost of renovating and maintaining the structure.  Main Street may apply for a grant to offset a portion of the cost of the study, but other funding sources are needed.

The demolition of the water tower is on the agenda of the special city council meeting on Tuesday, September 1st at 5:30 PM.  Please attend the meeting and discuss the issue with your alderman.

Streetscape Project

One of the points in Aledo Main Street’s vision statement is “new and continuing streetscape projects, including new awnings, green space, benches, lighting, etc;”. In 2006, Main Street and the City of Aledo partnered together to develop a comprehensive streetscape plan by hiring an architect and holding several public feedback meetings.  Since then much progress has been made toward implementing the plan, including new awnings throughout the downtown, decorative lampposts, benches, and the new Central Park pavilion.

The next step of the streetscape project was recently discussed with the City Council’s Property Committee.  Main Street’s recommendation is to continue following the streetscape plan by next focusing on the Central Park parking lot.  The suggested improvements include adding green space around the perimeter of the parking lot and installing an impressed asphalt walkway between the park and Main Street through the parking lot and alley to the north.  The green space and landscaping around the parking lot will soften the look of the lot and help tie it into the rest of Central Park.  In addition to the enormous aesthetic value, the additional green space will also have the practical benefit of providing a permeable surface to absorb rain water runoff from the parking lot.  The proposed walkway will also improve the appearance of the parking lot as well as the alley between SE 2nd Street and East Main Street.  Improving this path will promote traffic between Main Street and the park.

Pictures of the streetscape plans can be found below  Please let your alderman know that you support the beautification of our downtown by continuing the streetscape project.

RMA Memorial

Aledo Main Street is working with alumni from the Roosevelt Military Academy (RMA) and the City of Aledo to determine the best location for a RMA memorial.  The proposed memorial consists of a bronze statue on a granite base measuring a total of 13 1/2 feet tall.  In addition to the statue, the memorial may also include saplings from the “Roosevelt Tree”, walkway, flower beds, and benches.  The alumni have expressed the desire to place the memorial downtown to maximize its visibility.

Main Street proposed three options for consideration to the City Council’s Property Committee with a recommendation to place the memorial in the northwest corner of the Central Park parking lot.  The recommendation included the expansion of the corner’s current green space and the inclusion of a short wall behind the statue.  Instead, the Property Committee discussed several other possible locations and decided to provide the RMA alumni with the streetscape plan and ask them for their preferred location.

Farmer's Market

The Main Street Farmer’s Market has been held in the Central Park parking lot every Thursday from 4 - 7 PM since June 11th.  The market is often held in conjunction with other community events at the bandshell or under the new pavilion.  The market has been an even larger success than originally envisioned.  On average, 450 customers have visited the market’s 14 vendors and spend a total of $1,500 every week.  The success of the market is a result of the partnership between Aledo Main Street, Aledo Community Schools District #201, Mercer County Health Department, Mercer County Farm Bureau, and University of Illinois Extension/Mercer EDP Office funds from the USDA"s Specialty Crop Block Grant Program for Illinois Where Fresh Is.  Plans for another successful market session in 2010 are already in progress.
